To take a historic pre-war West Village co-op from “feminine and frilly” to “clean, clutter-free, and contemporary,” a Manhattan bachelor enlisted the help of New York-based interior designer Drew McGukin.

“The space had been previously renovated and featured traditional detailing overlaid with modern conveniences and updates,” explains McGukin, citing a classic fireplace, original hardwoods, and casement-style windows. “Save for the decorating, which was super traditional, it was move-in ready.”

Strong, more solid upholstery pieces and great fabrics helped translate a masculine sensibility. While edited, the one-bedroom space doesn’t lack warmth or personality, and McGukin expertly weaved tension between old and new throughout the space.

“Function was key, but the client also wanted a very organized, well-designed, and presentable apartment,” says McGukin. “Standout words to describe this space are cohesive, serene, and well-balanced. Tailored is another good word. Succinct detailing prevails.”

Think textural walls by Phillip Jeffries against green Schumacher velvets and fluted leather side tables paired with custom Zak+Fox lampshades.

“A truly great client came to life during the design process,” says McGukin. “This guy got into it, found his groove, and contributed to the overall success of his new home. I will never grow tired of this kind of mojo, soul-quality. The old saying ‘home is where the heart is didn’t come out of nowhere. As with most of life, you get back what you put in.”
