Surrounded by lush gardens, where visitors can pick strawberries and tomatoes at their peak and walk through groves of olive trees, Hoopes Vineyard isn't just any winery. "Originally built in 1890 for George Yount, the founder of Yountville, it's a historical landmark house in the Napa Valley," explains Erin Fetherston, a Los Angeles and New York–based designer who recently spruced up the property for a very special client: her childhood friend.
"Lindsay Hoopes and I have been friends since we were two years old, and this actually used to be her family home," the designer explains. "Her mom and dad bought it in the 1980s and fixed it up. I have memories of playing in this house when I was a little girl." Recently, the Hoopes decided to shift the property from a family home to a vacation rental—which you can book here—known as the Hoopes Guest House. Fetherston's task was to make it a "space for gathering, entertaining, and coming to stay." The main house houses a full kitchen, family room, and dining room, with a wraparound porch that overlooks the grounds and connects to the pool.
More From House Beautiful
Drawing inspiration from the rich setting, history, and her own nostalgia around being in the home as a child, Fetherston decided to keep the exterior white (as it had always been) and bring that same brightness inside. Bright Benjamin Moore paints lights up the living room and "charming country kitchen," where Fetherston added open shelves in place of the old cabinets and a backsplash from Fireclay Tile. Furnishings are meant to be comfortable and inviting, so guests feel at home.
Living Room
Located just off the dining room and kitchen, the airy space invites guests from the outside, too. Low-slung, comfortable furnishings give the room a comforting air.
Rugs: Annie Selke. Sofa: Lulu & Georgia. Coffee table: Crate & Barrel. Side tables: Four Hands. Armchairs: CB2. Curtains: Pottery Barn. Throw Pillows: The Citizenry.
Dining Room
A green accent wall "brings the outside in, which is always the marriage I'm looking to create in my design," says the designer. "And I put a mirror here strategically because you can always use a mirror where you don't have a window."
Pendants: Original BTC. Table, buffet, and mirror: Four Hands. Chairs: Lulu & Georgia. Accent wall paint: High Park, Benjamin Moore.
Kitchen
"We went with white appliances because the kitchen is right off of all of these windows. So I just really wanted it to bounce the natural light as much as possible," says Fetherston. Runner: Annie Selke. Potfiller: Perrin & Rowe, House of Rohl. Appliances: GE Café.
Bathroom
Warm finishes—from blush walls and tile to brass hardware—give the guest baths a clean and welcoming atmosphere. Paint: Hint of Violet, Benjamin Moore. Sink: Victoria + Albert, House of Rohl. Shower and faucet: Perrin & Rowe, House of Rohl.
Outdoor
Through French doors from the kitchen, guests can step onto the back porch that looks out onto the gardens. "It's the quintessential farm-to-table experience," says Fetherston. Decking: TimberTech. Furniture: Serena & Lily.
