The ideal guest bedroom feels like a private retreat—an enclave where friends and family can recharge after an eventful day, but that also showcases your personality and style. Believe it or not, a space that checks all of these boxes doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor. From bedding to window treatments, these are the elements of a guest room interior designers say are must-have splurge purchases, and what items are worth looking for a bargain on.

Splurge: The Mattress

If you've ever found yourself tossing and turning on a lumpy or impossibly firm mattress at someone else's house, you know mattress quality can make or break a stay. "No matter how beautiful the room is, getting a good night's sleep is paramount," says Lindsey Jamison, a lead designer based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. "Whether your guests are visiting or enjoying vacation time, a comfortable mattress is part of an overall positive experience."

What's the solution to your back pain? The Beautyrest Black mattress! It features a premium comfort layer made of cashmere, silk, and alpaca for airflow and breathability; innovative cooling technology, pocketed coils that reduce motion transfer, and advanced pressure relief. The only downside? Your guests may never want to leave.

Save: Nightstands, Dressers, and Side Tables

You likely use the case vgoods in your own room daily, but those in the guest bedroom will get less play. In fact, depending on the length of their stay, your visitors may not employ them at all. "If your guest room has a closet that can store clothes, that may be sufficient," says Jamison. If you want to provide some storage, she says, function is more important than quality.

Splurge: Bedding and Pillows

Give your guests the full first-class sleeping experience by topping a luxe mattress with high-end bedding. "Soft high-thread-count sheets, plush duvets, and premium pillows enhance the overall comfort and create a sumptuous haven," says Miami-based interior designer Joshira Raposo.

Beautyrest Absolute Relaxation Pillows are made with a ventilated, pressure-relieving memory foam and cooling technology for temperature regulation. And for a hotel-like experience, consider the soft and breathable Tuft & Needle Percale Sheet set, which includes a fitted and a top sheet, and comes in on-trend, soothing shades like Canyon and Glacier.

Save: Art and Decor

Thoughtful design touches help create a cozy, curated aesthetic. That said, you don't need to drop a lot of cash here. Look for these items at budget-friendly home-goods stores, secondhand shops, and yard sales. "Artwork, decorative objects, and throw pillows are elements that, with some creativity, can help you finish the space without investing a lot of money," says Raposo. For instance, you might elevate an inexpensive vase with fresh flowers, or upgrade an old frame with a new coat of paint to better match the rest of the room's aesthetic.

Splurge: Window Treatments

"These should offer privacy and allow guests to control the amount of natural light the room receives," says Angela Hamwey, a Cape Cod, Massachusetts-based interior designer. "Everyone has their own unique sleeping preferences." To ensure a perfect fit, custom shades or blinds are a worthy splurge. Or consider adding multiple layers of curtains: a sheer set and a blackout set. It's a touch your guests will notice and appreciate.

Save: Lighting

You don't need the most expensive sconce or lamp, as long as you install the right light bulbs. Overhead lighting should be dimmable; for a bedside lamp, opt for soft white bulbs that emit a cozy glow perfect for reading or relaxing before bed. Hamwey suggests an affordable lamp with a sculptural base or an interesting shade "to add character and personality."

Splurge: Rugs

In a guest bedroom, quality textiles are key. "Getting out of bed and feeling a soft rug under your feet is just marvelous," says Jamison. "It's a great way to start the day and adds a layer of coziness."

Avoid ultra-thin rugs that don't add much plushness; cheap, scratchy fabric that's rough to the touch; and hackneyed or overly prefab designs. Instead, choose a high-pile rug in a solid tone or a unique design, to elevate the space and tie the overall theme together.
