When Atlanta-based interior designer Jenna Buck Gross of Colordrunk Designs found out she and her husband were expecting baby number three—a surprise!—the decorator immediately set her sights on a new nursery. A seldom-used guest bedroom in the couple’s home turned out to be the perfect place.

“From a design perspective, it was the most neglected room in our house for years,” says Gross, “and, for reasons I still do not understand, it was painted brown originally. The room was hideous. But with the baby on the way, I felt like we finally had a purpose for the space.”

The wallcovering from Bien Fait provides a joyful backdrop for the crib wall, while Schumacher star pattern wallpaper on the ceiling evokes sleeping under the stars. The bright green custom valance and curtains in fabric also from Schumacher, the bold red-orange and blue paint scheme, the yellow Sazerac Stitches sputnik light fixture, and the commissioned “Little Prince” painting by artist Blayne Macauley round out the bold elements of the design.

Gross splurged on a Madeline Weinrib flat weave rug and a custom Roman window shade in a colorful but gender-neutral Lulu DK fabric. Now, she no longer wants to “gouge her eyes out when walking into the room,” the designer jokes.

Gross grounded the space with midcentury modern elements, including a dark wood and leather dresser from Bungalow 5, a wood and cream leather Eames style chair and ottoman, a wood and lucite crib from West Elm, and a neutral carpet from Patterson Flynn Martin.

“The result is everything I love in a room: great pattern play and lots of contrasting color and texture,” says Gross. “I love that the space works so well as a nursery but will no doubt grow with my son for years to come.”
