We’re convinced that a table—no matter how elegant—is nothing if it’s not surrounded by a selection of equally stylish chairs. So we’ve embarked on a mission to find the best dining chairs on the market. We tapped Louisville, Kentucky-based interior designer Amanda Jacobs to share her expert opinions and she didn't disappoint.
"I'm a big fan of mixing different chairs," she tells House Beautiful. "Not only is it practical for the everyday family, but it can add so much interest to the space. If I anchor the dining table with two different chairs, I usually prefer larger ones on the ends that have a higher back."
Scroll on to check out some seating that fits the high back bill. If you're searching for a splashy new set, this is the list for you. On the flip side, keep things traditional with a selection of identical chairs that, if nothing else, add major interest to your space. Go ahead, shop, and take a seat!
Looking for something luxe and affordable? These velvet dining chairs may be what your home needs. It's super cozy, too, thanks to the chair's foam fill.
When we think of French country, a chair like this comes to mind. After all, it checks two of the style's most crucial boxes: An ornate wood frame with an upholstered linen seat. Plus, this design comes in a set of two, four, or six, and it's on sale.

Maiden Home's gently curved Jane dining chair is easily one of our favorites. It's customizable, but since we have an affinity for shearling seating, we'd get it as is.
Serena & Lily's French bistro chair is one of the brand's best-sellers for a reason: Not only is it inspired by one of the most stylish places in the world (France), but it's practical, durable, and elegant. It's also available with and without arms and in five colors.
There's something classic and timeless about a slipcovered dining chair, and this Frontgate armless masterpiece is no exception. Of course, the best thing about slipcovers—aside from the fact that they add an understated elegance to any space—is that they're removable and washable. That said, these ones are made of a basically indestructible performance fabric, so you may have no need to take them off and toss them in the wash.
The sweeping curves of the Liana can be an airy addition to your dining room. Plus, the neutral tones will make it a piece of cake to style with your existing furniture.
For those who love the feel and look of leather, here's the dining chair for you. It has a laid-back minimalist style that won't overwhelm a room either.
It's not often that one of the best dining chairs looks as good inside as it does out, but here we are. But it as a set, which includes six chairs (with the option to throw in the table as well), with or without a cover, and with a multi-year warranty.

Searching for a very specific hand-woven, vintage-style chair? Of course, 1stDibs is your best bet. This distinct dining chair was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1947 and will be the ultimate conversation showpiece.
You can't go wrong with the elegant comfort this premium dining chair can provide. What really makes it stand out is the upper support from the back of the chair. With many similar options being the frame alone, the upholstered backing to match the seat takes the design to another level.
It may be hard to believe, but these custom-made chairs are under $250. And speaking of excellent back support, the top of the seat is adjustable so you can really lean into it when you sit back.
Inspired by Eames's iconic molded fiberglass chair, the George Oliver one is pretty similar in every way but one: The price. These days, the original can go for as high as $1,000 for just one chair, but this one comes in a set of four for less than $150. We'll take it.
We have a weakness for an eye-catching sculptural frame upholstered in sultry shades, like this dreamy velvet dining chair that comes in four unexpected colors.
Last, but not least, don't forget about your outdoor dining setup. Outer has dining chair sets that can withstand any weather (though it's still wise to snag furniture covers to fully extend their life) and they look lovely. Bonus: It's two for the price of one!
We're starting strong with handmade wooden seats by second-generation chair makers. George Sawyer—who was trained at the Rhode Island School of Design and by his father—was the original creator of the Windsor, so you know the quality is top-notch and worth the splurge. If a whole set isn't within your budget, consider grabbing one and making it a rustic accent chair.

What are popular dining chair trends?
House Beautiful
"I think patterns are making a play—whether it’s in the window treatments, cushions or upholstery or on the walls with wallpaper— maximalist dining rooms are a continuing trend," Jacob says. "Including the use of rich colors, combined with pattern and warmth allowing guests to feel comfortable and cozy for the duration of the dinner. There will always be a place for beautifully done minimalist dining rooms, but if going that direction I prefer a bold statement with the lighting or unique shapes and textures to keep it interesting."
How many dining chairs do you need?
"If your space allows, at least five or six with some extras floating around the room for larger groups," Jacobs suggests.
