Full disclosure: I would not describe myself as a hot sleeper, so when I received the recently launched Casper hybrid pillow with the brand's patented Snow Technology, I wasn't expecting it to be particularly life-changing. That said, my 74-year-old New York City apartment building is uncomfortably hot all day every day, so when I opened the slender box with my new cooling pillow, I was intrigued.

The Casper pillow comes rolled up in an airtight plastic wrapping, but as soon as you free it, it fluffs right up. It's also heavier than your typical sleeping pillow, which I appreciated because it feels more luxurious. Most important, though, it really does feel cool to the touch, so I did some digging to understand how such a thing is possible. First, it's covered in a pale blue CoolTouch cover, which is why it feels like it's been chilled. The inner layers—a phase-change material situated on a layer of AirScape foam and Casper's HeatDelete—are also on the colder side.

So I patiently waited until it was late enough to go to sleep with high expectations for the hybrid pillow. My biggest presleep concern was the comfort level because it is pretty heavy and feels quite dense. It is extremely cozy, though. It took a few moments to figure out what position felt the most supportive (on my back), but once I got settled, I felt like I was in a luxurious spa. The dense foam keeps the pillow from clumping—no matter how much you move around in your sleep—so there's no need to fluff it back up in the morning or if you happen to wake up in the middle of the night. Back to the foam for a second, though: It's not so heavy that you feel like you’re sleeping on a pile of bricks because it’s sink-in soft.

If I had to describe it in one sentence, I would say that it is instantly soothing. Unlike most pillows, which start to feel warm from the natural heat of your scalp, this one stays cool all night. The only downside is that at $149 for a queen size, it's not cheap. So, is the Casper cooling pillow worth it? Simply put: yes. (And if you buy two pillows, you’ll get 10 percent off!)

If you're looking for a cooling pillow that's backed by more than just good marketing, you'll appreciate this one because its chilled temperature will likely be the first thing you'll notice. You heard it here first: This thing is the real deal.
