“A vacation in the backyard." When Charlotte Lucas got the call from her clients about designing a 2,000-square-foot poolhouse for their Atlanta home, she envisioned an actual getaway. “They’re big travelers,” says the Charlotte, North Carolina–based designer. “They’ve stayed in some beautiful luxury hotels and resorts, and we wanted to bring that elevated style and design to their backyard.”

Inside, a vaulted ceiling is covered in bamboo, the floor is hand-painted in a black-and-white -geometric pattern, and leafy and trellis-inspired prints are splashed on upholstery and walls. Outside, red-and-white cabana-stripe fabrics evoke long beach days in the French Riviera—Lucas used them on pillows, dining chair cushions, and fabulous umbrellas by the pool. All this pizzazz couldn’t compromise the necessary functionality of the building, of course, so Lucas used performance fabrics throughout. “The space needed to be able to hold up to wet feet and wet bathing suits, but also feel elevated enough in its design to host cocktail hour for adults,” she explains. “Nothing could be too precious.”

While the primary residence boasts a much more traditional aesthetic, “My clients were really open to pushing the envelope in a space that doesn’t get used every day,” says the designer. “It makes you feel inside but like you’re a part of the outside.”
