As a maximalist at heart, Francesca Grace is an expert at fashioning eclectic designs with vintage pieces and bold colors for her clients. The interior designer and home stager (who was named to HB's Next Wave Class of 2022) brings the same style to her own home: Built in the 1920s and located in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, the rental property was given an enchanting makeover by the Fix My Flip star that any cottagecore obsessive will adore.

The two-bedroom, one-bathroom home stretches across 1,500 square feet and sits on a large piece of land. “I loved leaning into the original character and charm when designing this space and making it my own,” Grace says.

To play up the home’s coveted features—a vintage brick fireplace in the living area, a beautifully tiled kitchen, and stained glass windows in the bedroom—Grace gave the interiors a cosmetic refresh. She brought in new light fixtures, wall paint, wallpaper, accessories, and furniture—many of which are vintage finds that took her countless hours to source: “I’m continuously making changes as I find a new wallpaper I love or a piece of vintage furniture that I then need to make edits to the overall space to complement my new finds.”

In the backyard, Grace added value to the home by building a deck for dining and lounging al fresco. The surrounding chicken coop and fruit trees complete the outdoor setting’s fairytale-like magnetism.

Now, the home feels even more special. “While I didn’t make too many renovations to this home as it was a rental property, I was still able to make the space my own with playful patterns, warm textures, and colorful furnishings,” Grace says.

Q & A

House Beautiful: What was the reason/inspiration for the new design? What are a few ways you achieved your vision?

Francesca Grace: My goal was to make the home feel full of life, bold colors, and charm. I am a maximalist at heart and wanted my own home to reflect my point of view on design. I knew that I wanted to incorporate vintage-inspired patterns and designs both in the wallpaper selections and furniture. Each room needed to have its own vibe but flow cohesively together with all other spaces. There are lots of colors and patterns throughout the house that are all very different but together make for an exciting and enchanting experience. Don’t be scared to incorporate a variety of colors and patterns. Stick to a specific feeling and tone, which should be consistent throughout the design.

HB: Did you encounter any memorable hiccups, challenges, or surprises during the project? How did you pivot?

FG: I think the most noteworthy challenge was the primary bedroom. Originally, the primary bedroom was the family room, which was quite large. There have been countless pieces of furniture that have been rotated in that bedroom, but I ended up reworking the layout perfectly.

HB: Where did the majority of the budget go?

FG: I would say the majority of the budget went to the main living space (living room and dining rooms) and the primary bedroom.

HB: How did you save money/DIY/get crafty?

FG: Second-hand sourcing is always going to be a huge money saver. There are so many unique vintage finds for affordable prices that elevate and bring character to the space. I also installed my own wallpaper in a few of the rooms with the help of my team.
