With fall in full swing and winter on its way, The Home Depot and VRBO couldn't have picked a better time to collaborate. The unexpected duo recently released the ultimate home makeover in the Berkshires for two lucky vacation rental owners.
Not only is the Berkshires a design lover's dream—courtesy of the luxury redesigns in the area—it's a popular destination for families all the way to individuals trying to unwind. And these are just a few of the reasons why the major brands chose to explore the Massachusetts town. Of course, that's not all. The exciting project also involved the vision of design stars Holly and Brad Lauritzen (@ourfauxfarmhouse), Fariha Nasir (@pennies_for_a_fortune), and Danielle Guerrero (@ournestonpowell).
The experts were each tasked with different parts of the lake house and they had merely two weeks to get the job done. While no major renovation was involved, the transformation was still durastic. Keep scrolling and you'll see how far a fresh coat of paint, peel-and-stick wallpaper, and stylish decor can go. Reimagining the functionality of the rooms had a lot to do with it, too. For instance, there was no sense in displaying skis by a futon when that guest room should have had beds for people to sleep on—ultimately increasing the nightly rate of the rental.
"Making upgrades to any home or rental property with furniture, wall art, wallpaper and textiles can truly change its personality without the need for a major renovation," Corinne Bentzen, general manager for the Home Depot Home, said in a statement. "Through the makeover of a vacation rental in the Berkshires, we’re excited to showcase just how impactful these easy and attainable home updates, from fresh bedding and throws to functional seating, can be for travelers and property owners."

Forget White, Do Dark Cabinets
For those hesitant on cabinetry color, take this as a sign to go for it! Though it may seem counterintuitive, adding dark hues to your kitchen will brighten things up. Create a Dramatic, Modern Entrance
This may be hard to believe, but the door on the left side is a sauna. The dated wood has hidden it along with the commanding presence of an entryway. But thanks to the bold, modern farmhouse-inspired pieces, the purpose of the area is finally clear and chic.
Pay Attention to the Details
Look closely and notice that there's an unwanted door in the primary bedroom. "The best thing that we did was covering the closet on the wall," Holly tells House Beautiful. "We would never say to cover a closet, but we have access from a different point in the room...and covering it gave us a lot more real estate to work with. Also, we were able to add a king-size bed, instead of a queen."
Yes, Yes, Yes to Wallpaper
Whether you're renting or welcoming renters in, an easy way to make a temporary space feel more at home is with wallpaper that fits your aesthetic. While it's not pictured here, Nasir even covered up 80's style mirrored closet doors with wallpaper proving how versatile the simple solution can be.
Furthermore, she recommends mixing metals to layer in warmth and texture. "In this room, I've mixed in matte black and warm brass accents," the designer says. "It's a great way to make your room look more unique."
The More Beds, the Better
Since this is a VRBO property made for families, it made sense the trio of collaborators wanted to bring in additional beds. Who needs snow gear and seating when the renters could get rid of that air mattress no one wants to sleep on, in exchange for matching twin beds.
A Rest and Relaxation Space Is a Must
The funny thing is, there was actually a bed in the wrong spot. Guerrero reconfigured the attic into a much-needed common space where guests could congregate for happy hour or coffee.
You Always Need More Seating Outside
Then, she kept the party going with the most inviting outdoor setup complete with a fire pit. "I really wanted this outdoor deck to be a community space where everyone could talk," Guerrero shares. "I got a lot of seating centered around the focal point which is this fire pit and I have these amazing swivel chairs so people could also take in the gorgeous views."
