There's something about a baby's room that seems to make parents reach for the pastels: If they're not "baby" pink and blue, nurseries are often light yellow, green, or other soft hues. Not so for one child of design royalty, though: Crew Gaines's bedroom is a shade not commonly associated with children's spaces.

"It's a rich gray," reveals Joanna Gaines of their youngest son's bedroom. In a roundtable discussion ahead of the launch of their Magnolia Network, the couple shared more details about designing for all of their kids, including Crew, who just turned 3.

"His personality is so layered, that when I think about what I’m layering on, it’s all his colorful books that I really want to highlight," explains Jo. Adds Chip: “The stuffed animals pile high."

Jo shares that her attitude towards designing for her kids has evolved as she's become a more experienced mother: "As the kids get older, they really teach me how to design just by listening and hearing what they love," she says. "That’s what helps you make these decisions.”

Ultimately, she advises, "the rooms should feel like the child and not like the designer.”

In Crew's case, having a richer neutral makes way for him to express himself in a unique way. And, lest you think a calmer color implies seriousness, think again: Chip shared that their son's recent birthday celebration ended in quite a hilarious way: "We had this cake and I said, 'Crew you get the first bite,'" recalls Chip."I thought he’d grab a fork, but he just face plants right into the cake like he did when he was one! I was like, oh shoot, he thinks this is just how you eat cake! He hasn’t learned how to use utensils. It just ended up in a big food fight."
