To truly get the most out of a room, it's best to invest in multi-functional pieces that enhance the space's versatility. So when Kentucky-based interior designer Chenault James was tasked with creating a dining room well-suited for a family, her main objective was making sure it was used beyond special occasions and holiday dinners. James's solution? She decided to think of the space as more of a salon than a traditional, formal dining room, and commissioned her husband, Ed James of Four Board Woodworks, to help reinvent the wheel.
Since the main event in any dining room is the table, that's what they began. After tons of sketches and ideas, the duo decided to crafted a dining table that could also be adjusted to coffee table height, separated into two smaller square tables, and—last but most definitely not least—converted into a ping-pong table. There's a leather net that pops on when it's game time, and the table can divide into two for card games or cocktails when it's not being used for meals.
The shape-shifting table, dubbed the Boomerang, has three distinct uses, ensuring that the dining room is so much more than just that stuffy room you eat in on major holidays. Think of it as the three-in-one shampoo, conditioner, body wash of interior design, except much more elevated, effective, and fun. It just goes to show that one really great investment piece can turn dead space into the most versatile room in the house.
