Sofa from George Smith. Photographs by Ellen von Unwerth, Pamela Hanson, and Arthur Elgort

Sonia Kashuk: Our design sensibility is a bit bohemian and exotic. That classic toile sofa isn't what we'd have chosen typically, but we like the play of all the different black-and-white patterns.

Our library is the coziest, most seductive room in our home. Before we renovated, the space was too modern, with black floating shelves on Sheetrock walls. We wanted more warmth. We love the snug cabin feel and patina of paneled rooms, so we clad ours in antique chestnut.

My obsession is photography. I began collecting in my 20s, spending every extra dollar to buy works by Lartigue, Bresson, Doisneau. I have at least 100 photographs now, many by fashion photographers like Arthur Elgort, who I've worked with as a makeup artist.

Daniel Kaner: We're maximalists. More is more. Books are my addiction — reading, for me, is a meditation. I'm a big collector of design books. One of my perennial favorites is Bruce Weber's A House Is Not a Home.

The library is our private family sanctuary. It's where we gravitate after a long day to spend time together and with our two children, but I also use it as my substitute 'man cave,' my creative space. I draw, play with watercolors, work on scrapbooks. I have the ottoman set up like a desk, with everything I need stacked on top of it.

SK: There's definitely a magic feeling to the room. I love being in here — in the evening, when the light goes soft, it glows like a cabinet of curiosities.
